Guest Post: The Only Child Syndrome By Lacey Blackwood

Happy Friday Fabulous Fawnies! Today I have a wonderful guest post by Lacey Blackwood that will help "second-time-around" parents prepare their little one for baby number two!  When it comes time to expand our little family of three, I plan to start early showing McKenzie how fun, unique and important her big sister roll is. Thanks to Lacey's wonderful tips, I now have a game plan if we are ever so blessed with another bundle of joy!

Like many expectant parents, there are lists of things to get ready before the big day. You are both jittery and excited; and why shouldn't you be? You’re getting ready for an amazing miracle.
But like those expectant parents that are going on their second child—there is something else to consider when bringing in your new bundle of joy: telling your once only child that they’re going to have to share.

Yes, actually share.

What’s extremely funny is the fact that many parents or mothers believe that it shouldn't even be addressed: your child may be “too young” to even understand. However, they understand more than you think. They've been used to your attention only for a period of time, and now they have to give up on some of that.

Not that I’m trying to scare you off—it’s a no brainer. I have a couple of simple ideas and advice to give, that’ll better prepare your oldest, for the newest little one to arrive.

Before the big day

Your child (depending on his or her age) should be seeing signs in the changes of you, and the household. Talk to your little one, and explain that a new family member will be joining soon, and that they’ll be the older brother/sister. Usually parents give a gift (like a necklace or a shirt they can wear, like one of these big sister shirts) that says their new title. This can help them feel more connected to what is happening, and is giving them a sign of responsibility.

At the hospital

Hospitals can be scary for a young child, so make sure whoever the baby sister is for your oldest that special day, is someone that your child feels very comfortable with. Usually these visits are brief, since your child may become bored, or frightened. Have your baby sister plan a special outing after seeing you, as to make it easier to leave you when the time comes.

When your oldest first arrives in your hospital room, it’s important to make sure your hands are free, so you can give the attention your daughter or son needs. Hold them, and tell them how special they are for waiting, and that they get to be one of the first people to see their new younger brother or sister. Usually, children are very interested in a baby, so let them see him or her—either by holding him, or just holding their hand or foot. You can also plan out that your child brings a new gift or blanket to your new baby, as a sign of friendship.

The days to come

Your oldest will have times of “fits” and “temper tantrums”—but that is to be expected. As long as you explain to them as best you can that there will be love shared, your child will soon begin to understand.
Have your oldest be involved as much as possible with the new baby the first days of arrival. Babies loved to be entertained, and toddlers love to entertain: a win-win for both parties. Ask your oldest to sing a song or tell a story to your newborn.

Ask for help when changing the diaper or giving your newborn a bath. These could be simple steps like holding the towel, or going to grab an extra diaper; having your oldest become a part of the new change, will help him or her better adjust.

Enjoy the ride

There will be bumps throughout the learning process of having children—just learn to accept them! Having your oldest understand and become a part of this new chapter in your life will be an easier transition in the long run. Accept the mistakes along the way, and learn that love will conquer everything.

Pool Time with Baby - Checklist & Tips For Smooth Sailing

Good morning sunshine's! Today I am sharing tips on how to make your pool-time with baby run like a well-oiled machine. At first I have to admit, the thought of packing everything, timing it just right and drudging up to the neighborhood pool seemed daunting. It actually kept me home most days because of the chaotic train wreck that I envisioned every time I considered it. That is pretty much how I approach all outings now that I have baby in tow. I build it up in my mind as being this HUGE, stressful task instead of taking a moment to "dumb it down" (in my mind) and enjoy a fun adventure with my daughter. Now that summer is coming to end (well, the pool hours are), I decided to throw all my hesitations, fears and doubts out the window and take my baby girl to the pool...All By MYSELF!... I know, crazy right?

Here are tips that I found helpful to have a safe and successful day at the pool with baby.

Timing:
  • I waited until after Kenzie took her morning nap.
  • While Kenzie napped, I got everything together and packed up the car.
  • When she woke up, I changed her into her Huggies Little Swimmer diaper ,  swimsuit and cover-up
  • I fed her and then we were off! :)
**A well rested and fed baby is key to having a successful pool outing**

What to bring:
  • Stroller - This helps transport pool accoutrement as well as contain your little while you set up shop. It also comes in handy when baby is ready to catch some Zzzz's. (No need for a pack and play)
  • Large Beach Bag - you shouldn't need more than one bag. Leave diaper bag at home
  • I brought a baby float with canopy for McKenzie to sit in. She loved it, however, she was ready to get into the big pool after a few minutes.
What to pack for a 2-hour stay: (you may want to add more if you plan to stay longer (i.e,diapers, bottles & snacks)
  • A hooded towel for McKenzie
  • A beach towel for me
  • Hat for MK (she wouldn't leave it on so it stayed in the beachbag
  • 1 extra Huggies Little Swimmer diaper (Just in case of a messy accident)
  • Wipes (in case there is a messy accident)
  • 1 extra "day to day" diaper (to wear home)
  • Aveeno Baby Sunblock Lotion (MK prefers lotion vs spray)
  • Sippy Cup for MK and water bottle for me (just to keep hydrated)
  • A few bath toys (We didn't play with these much)
Not sure what to think

Towel time while mommy set up shop under
the umbrella

This floaty was the perfect way to introduce McKenzie
to the water and her surroundings.
She loved the floaty, however, she began to feel antsy
and hot after a while(as it keeps their upper body pretty dry),
so she was ready to jump in!
We glided and bounced around the big pool.
She loved watching me blow bubbles.
Her favorite activity was me sitting her on the edge of the pool,
counting to three then lifting her up and into the water
(sort of like a  baby-style dive)  We even went under water a few times!
(Counting to three and quickly blowing into baby's face, before dipping them
under, causes them to breathe-in and then breathe out  while under water)

Once I introduced her to the steps, it was love at first "sit"!
She loved splashing around and pulling up on the side.

She felt like such a big girl :)

Preparing For Departure:

  • I "remote" started the car to cool off
  • I changed Kenzie out of her swimsuit and her "little swimmer" diaper
  • I put her normal "day to day" diaper on, along with her cover-up/dress
    • Cover-ups or T-shirts are "a must", as it acts as a barrier against the hot carseat straps.
  • I then sat her in her stroller while I got dressed and loaded up our things
  • Then off to the car we went!
Don't you love my "after swim" hair-do?

I  hope you feel inspired to conquer your fear of having a "mommy or daddy & me" day at the pool! Just keep it simple. Pack a few necessities and let the water do all the entertaining!

Guest Post: Co-Ed Baby Shower

Hello my fabulous Fawn fans! Today, I have a special guest post/article by Jenny Franklin. She is here to give us wonderful tips on how to create a "father-to-be" friendly baby shower that will allow for a fun and festive celebration that will make he and his friends feel right at home!

Now I know what you’re thinking---but take a second to think about it. A co-ed baby shower is the fun and new thing to do! Get your man involved, and tell your girls to do the same. By the end of this article, you’ll be able to convince them to go to attend the baby shower with you, and will not believe why he’s never thought of it before.

I promise!

Now, baby shower themes and parties used to be only for girls. Which, it most certainly can be. The door is just beginning to open for the males—and I wanted to know immediately (after I attended one) why this has never happened before! It was so genius, and so incredibly fun. Even the dudes were enjoying it.

So how do we get them to come? Easy.

First, the food. Because, what man doesn’t enjoy food? Just remember when preparing the snacks, that you aren’t overdoing it in one basic color. If a man walks in a room full of the color pink, he’s going to want to immediately leave. I’m not saying not to have the color, just tone it down a bit.

  • Smores On A Stick
    • Clever and simple. Dip a marsh mellow in chocolate; roll it around in graham cracker crumbs, and voila! A yummy smore that everyone will love.

  • Cigar Pretzel Sticks
    •  Now they aren’t real cigars, just a cute little way of placing them (and something that the boys will love!) Just dip pretzel sticks in whatever coating you’d like (I’d pick chocolate) and sprinkle it with the color of your theme.

Those are just a couple of cute and simple ways for creating snack for your baby shower—that your man won’t complain about! Next, are some fun games that they will really get into playing.

  • Having A Baby
    • Now this is super easy and super fun. Split the group up into two teams. Each person gets a balloon (pick a color for your theme). On “go” the first person on the team blows up their balloon, and stuffs it under his/her shirt. After they accomplish that, the next person does it, and so on. After everyone has a full balloon under their shirt, they must each pop it one at a time. The first team to blow up and pop their balloon wins!
  • Blindfolded Diapering
    • Now, this game is hilarious. All you have to do is borrow to dolls (or stuffed animals, whichever you have easier access to). Have the men split up one vs. one. Blindfold them, and time them to see who can “best” diaper the doll or stuffed animal. This one will be really fun to watch!

Finally, some party favors for both the men and the women.

  • For the girls, give each of them a plastic case filled with your favorite candy and nail polish. All of these can be found at a dollar store, and it’s super cute! Not to mention really easy to make—and everyone will love them!
  • For the boys, it’s kind of the same idea, except completely filled with food (because come on, we know that’s a give-in). Place popcorn in the clear container, and write a cute phrase.

After creating this fun and awesome co-ed baby shower, you’ll wonder why this was never really done before. It gets everyone together for this special day—and it’s fun and simple. Everyone will congratulate you for how thoughtful and creative you were with all of the planning, even the boys. I’m sure of it!
